The History of Masquerade Choir

Formed in September 1999, MASQUERADE CHOIR is a choir for young singers aged 7 years and over and on average, Masquerade performs one concert per month.
In September 2000, a Junior Choir was formed, to provide a training base for the Youth Choir.

The choir rehearses on Friday evenings at the Masque Performing Arts Centre, Latimer Community Arts College, Barton Seagrave, Kettering.

The choir was formed by Barry Clark, who studied at the Royal Academy of Music and has many years experience of training young singers.

In July 2000, the Youth Choir won the coveted first prize in the Children's Choirs' class at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod.

Since their initial success at Llangollen in 2000, Masquerade have had considerable success in competition. The following year, Masquerade made the long trek up to Blackpool for their Centenary Music Festival and returned as Junior Champions!

2002 saw the Youth Choir progress through the audition stages of the Sainsbury's Choir of the Year competition and be selected as one of the country's six top junior choirs to compete in the finals of the BBC televised competition at the Lowry Centre in Salford in the November.
Following the finals, the choir was invited, as one of the two best runners-up, to compete in the BBC TV hosted Grand Final at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
Despite not winning the overall title of Sainsbury's Choir of the Year, all the six choirs were acclaimed as winners, putting Masquerade amongst the very best of their peers.

On other occasions, Masquerade have performed at Disneyland, Paris and appeared as a featured choir in BBC TV's Songs of Praise programme.

At Llangollen in July 2002, the Junior Choir made its first competitive appearance. Entered in the Junior Children's Choirs Class, the choir acheived an incredible second place.
In 2003 the Junior Choir were once again placed second and leading English choir.

The Junior Choir's visit to Llangollen in 2004 saw them improve on their previous results to win the Class and emulate the success of the older choir.

The choir's main aim is to foster a love of choral singing, while mounting an interesting and worthwhile programme of events, with concerts usually on Friday or Saturday evenings.

Both choirs continue to maintain the high standards they themselves have set and regular concerts allow them to showcase their talents to a wide audience.
